What is Bentwood? Bentwood Apprenticeship is a School of Ministry located in Anchorage, Alaska at Skyline Foursquare Church.
Our Vision: To be a community dedicated to encouraging, equipping, and supporting current and emerging pastors & leaders.
Our Mission: We desire to be a community of pastors and leaders who support and encourage one another. We strive to equip the head, hands, and heart. The head through relevant and intentional college level courses; the hands through work in your local church and city doing practical ministry; the heart through mentoring from trusted pastors and leaders who will challenge and encourage you as you grow in deeper relationship with the Lord. Bentwood offers support both now, while participating in Bentwood’s Apprenticeship program, and in the future through lasting, supportive relationships within the Bentwood community.
bent · wood – adjective \ˈbent-ˌwu̇d\
: made of wood that is bent rather than cut into shape
“During one of my summer trips to Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska, I had the privilege to visit the carving shed in beautiful Hydaburg, Alaska. While at the carving shed I listened to stories from Hydaburg’s story teller, and watched with tears in my eyes as Master Carvers skilfully carved totem poles. (I am forever grateful to the people of Hydaburg for sharing their beautiful culture and kind hearts). While there I was also able to witness the making of a bentwood box. Bentwood boxes are made from a single plank of cedar. Three notches are made in the cedar, and the cedar is then steamed until it is pliable. The wood is then bent to form a box.
Each box has a purpose and is carefully crafted to fulfill this purpose. As disciples, we are so similar to the cedar used to create the bentwood boxes. If we allow Him to work in us, the Lord shapes us into vessels for His purposes. But, He can only accomplish His purpose in us if we allow Him to chip away what is unnecessary and hinders. We must become pliable so that His will may be done in our lives and He can shape us into what He has designed us to be.”
